The reserve

London Wildlife Trust is creating a new garden space on an historic site nestled between the new river and East Reservoir in Stamford Hill.  Complete with a fully equipped eco-classroom with a living roof, it provides a base for school visits and a variety of community projects.

Local people can take part in a number of hands on activities including growing wild food in the community raised beds, bird watching over the reservoir, arts and craft workshops, landscape design and construction, wildwalks and mini-beast hunts along the nature trail.

Reservoir, river, mini-beast village, summer meadow, woodland copse, stag beetle sanctuary

Great crested grebe, common tern, reed bunting; emperor dragonflies; speckled wood

West Reservoir

The reserve
The Stoke Newington Reservoirs Conservation Area for outstanding character includes part of the New River, both the East and the West reservoirs, and the surrounding meadows. A number of listed buildings are included such as the former Victorian ‘Castle’ pumping station and the WRC tower building. The Reservoirs themselves are also a designated Site of Metropolitan Importance for their visiting winter bird populations.

London Wildlife Trust has been working at the West Reservoir Centre since April 2003. We currently run an environmental education project at the centre. Our facilities include a fully equipped indoor classroom, qualified and experienced teachers, an outside lunch area, toilets and hand washing facilities, all of which are accessible by wheelchair users.

Habitats you'll see

Reservoir, river, pond and reed-bed; grasslands, scrub and hedgerow.

Species you might spot
Heron and reed bunting; damselflies; pipistrelle and noctule bats.
