Springwatch fever comes to Southwark this weekend
Wednesday, June 04, 2008

Hoverfly on great burnet (c) Liz BarrettOn 6th and 7th of June London Wildlife Trust is joining forces with BBC Springwatch to help transform a corner of Surrey Square in Southwark from an overgrown wildlife patch into a Breathing Place loved by people and wildlife.

The SWAT (Springwatch Action Team) will be working hard to create an urban wildlife haven. Why don’t you pop along and see us in action? You can also track SWAT’s progress online and on BBC London radio and television.

Enric CucarellaThe plan is to enhance the community nature patch, so it will be a perfect habitat for all the foxes, birds and squirrels that already live there, and makes the most of the existing trees and foliage. We also want to attract more wildlife – and more people!

London Wildlife Trust’s Enric Cucarella will lead a team of volunteers in a bid to not only create a wonderful Breathing Place, but also to ensure the best natural features of the area are kept and that local wildlife is protected.

SWAT logoCurrently the site is full of buddleia, brambles and nettles, and in general the biodiversity of the site is fairly limited. As well as clearing of nettles and buddleia, we’ll be adding informal seating and a path through the wildlife area, the team will be creating a bug bank, a deadwood hedge, a mini beast tower, burying buckets for stag beetles and putting up homes for birds and bats.
