The Remarkable History of Woodberry Down is a guided walk around Woodberry Wetlands with one of our experienced guides.

The area around Woodberry Wetlands, known as Woodberry Down, has a long and fascinating history. Previously farmland, the construction of the New River in the 17th Century enabled the spread of urban development. London County Council compulsorily purchased the land in 1934, beginning to create a vision of a ‘utopian estate of the future’.

In the meantime, the two Stoke Newington reservoirs remained largely undisturbed. Wildlife had made a home here, and when it was suggested the reservoirs be filled in and built on, a campaign by local people ensured that they were saved. The East Reservoir in particular was later designated as a Site of Metropolitan Importance, and in 2016 was opened to the public for the first time in almost 200 years as a new London Wildlife Trust nature reserve called Woodberry Wetlands.

If you love London heritage, architecture, nature and wildlife, or simply walking in a beautiful waterside setting, this is a riveting tour not to be missed. The stories told by the surrounding developments alone make the area an absolutely fascinating place to visit.
