Team Volunteering

Employee volunteering with London Wildlife Trust is a fantastic way to contribute to London’s wildlife and local communities.

London Wildlife Trust’s nature reserves, as well as being valuable habitats and wildlife sanctuaries, are also essential resources for local people and communities. Reserves act as education centres for London school children, sites for volunteers to learn new skills and areas of relaxation for local residents.

A team day with us can be part of an ongoing partnership with the Trust, or as a one-off event, but the benefits are most definitely mutual:

Benefits for you
  • Group activities enhance team bonds and boost morale
  • Conservation tasks introduce new skills and improve communication outside the everyday working environment
  • Enjoyment of a rewarding day in an inspirational setting
  • The opportunity to engage and visibly contribute to the local environment, mitigating the impact of your carbon footprint
Benefits for us
  • London Wildlife Trust receives practical help on our nature reserves from highly motivated groups
  • Organisations and individuals, often without experience of wildlife or conservation, learn about the importance of conserving nature in an urban context
  • London Wildlife Trust charges for team dats to cover staff time and material costs
Tasks

Tasks vary according to season, but are always tailored to suit the interests of the volunteers and their skill-sets. Popular activites include: hedge planting, bird and bat-box creation, habitat enhancements, tree coppicing, bulb planting, building stag beetle loggeries, pond clearing and meadow raking.

Teams from the RSA Group came out to work with us throughout 2011, building in excess of 75 stag beetle loggeries on parks and green spaces in Hackney. These 'insect hotels' are loved by stag beetles, which have been in decline in Europe due to the destruction of dead wood and tidying up of parks and green spaces.

HSBC volunteers worked tirelessly to revitalise a special acid grassland nature reserve in Lewisham, New Cross Gate Cutting. Currently closed to the public, with HSBC's help we have created pathways, steps and fencing improving the accessibility of the site

Current opportunites
The first few months of the New Year are always a busy time for our conservation team. Current volunteer opportunites include:

Do You Dig It?
Work to support the 'Do You Dig It?' educational food-growing project at our flagship Camley Street reserve in King's Cross, by helping to create a wildflower garden, vegetable patch, new habitat and educational signage for school children on our newly installed 'floating garden boat' on Regent's Canal... Suitable for a group of 15 people.

Winter Wonderland Walks
Build a bird hide in the morning, then take a guided winter nature walk long the waterfront on our East Reservoir site in Hackney, ending with a warm drink in the local pub... This activity is ideal for small groups of 6-8 people.
