The West meadow at Gutteridge Wood is “unimproved” grassland, which means it has not been heavily fertilised for grazing, but kept in a natural state with a good diversity of flowers. This makes a better habitat for insects and other wildlife, but, as with all meadows, taller and more vigorous plants would take over, given a chance. Winter is the time to cut back the scrub which gradually grows in from the edges if left unchecked.

What to bring
Gloves, tools and training are provided but you will need to make sure your clothing protects you. Footwear should have good soles, and be waterproof. There will be brambles and thorns, so wear old clothes that cover your arms and legs. Consider the weather! Make sure you will be warm and dry and don’t forget to bring some water to drink, and snacks if you will need them. There are no toilets on the reserve.
