Jaiminee Patel: Nature's Reclamation Along the River Lea

From the age of six, Walthamstow- its enchanting forest and 
the fleeting reflections of the Lea— has been the wellspring 
of my art and my love for the natural world. Mud on my shoes, 
suntraps and shadows, velvet mosses and twinkling webs: these 
small, persistent presences took hold of me as surely as the 
industrial ghosts that stand still along the riverbank. 

This exhibition reveals a childlike fascination with the idea 
that everything is a fluid being, even memory. The river 
carries echoes of industry and toil to remake them into new 
forms of beauty. My work explores that transformation: how 
rust becomes root, how abandoned structures are softened by 
lush green, and how traces of human endeavour diffuse into 
spontaneous life. 

I work in mixed media, moving from broad gestural strokes that 
capture the river’s momentum and the sweep of sky to 
meticulous, minute details that record human grit. Drawing on 
my background as a theatrical makeup artist, I repurpose old 
makeup—blending remnants of past performances to spotlight how 
artistic and industrial histories can be reworked into 
something new. Also, Ayurvedic medicinal stones are ground to 
form pigments, bringing a touch of the East to pieces. I hold 
a Diploma from Central St Martins school of art, grounding my 
practice in Western art training. 

Walk these works as you would the Lea—slowly, with attention. 
Let the broad strokes guide you across distance and time; let 
the tiny details anchor you to the present. I hope the 
exhibition prompts reflection of the quiet caress from mother 
nature that reshape our shared places.
