About the event

Fungi are a diverse and fascinating kingdom with 15,000 species found in the UK alone! They come in all colours, shapes and sizes, from tiny microscopic yeasts and moulds to those that produce large fruiting bodies, like the aptly named Giant Puffball.

Join Zak (London Wildlife Trust ranger) as we learn about the enigmatic but vital fungi in our ecosystems, and how to identify them.

We will start the day with a talk on what fungi are (they aren't just mushrooms!), and what makes them the backbone of our ecosystem. We will then learn methods on how to identify different fungi species, using our skills to explore Walthamstow Wetlands, and identify any fungi we find on the day.

If the weather conditions are too extreme for a walk, we will be using clay to model different fungi, using their variety of shapes as inspiration.

Please dress for the weather and note, some paths are uneven, so walking shoes/boots are recommended.

This event is aimed at adults aged 18+, but can be inclusive for young people aged 11 and above, who must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

All proceeds from this event are invested into London Wildlife Trust’s wider nature recovery work across London.

*Please note this is not a foraging walk and we will not be harvesting mushrooms to eat, due to safety reasons and to allow wildlife to have plenty of food throughout the seasons.*
