The play area at Woodberry Wetlands was officially opened by naturalist, presenter and Championing Nature Ambassador Steve Backshall, who welcomed children from Holmleigh Primary School to explore the space for the first time during an outdoor learning session. The session highlighted how hands-on, nature-based learning experiences can spark curiosity and connect children to their natural environment.

Steve Backshall, Championing Nature Ambassador said:

“It was a joy to officially open the Woodberry Wetlands play area today and hopefully inspire future explorers to appreciate their surroundings and build the foundations of a life-long relationship with the natural world.”

The new play area has transformed an underused space by the reserve’s east entrance into an inclusive, sensory-rich environment designed to encourage imaginative, nature-based play. Built using natural materials, including a fallen horse chestnut tree from the reserve, and set within the wetland habitat, it invites children to climb, balance, build and explore while supporting physical coordination, creativity, confidence and wellbeing. By providing opportunities for outdoor play and exploration in the setting of an urban nature reserve, the space helps children and families develop meaningful connections with wildlife and green spaces.

Natural play encourages curiosity, creativity and confidence outdoors — building a meaningful nature connection within a thriving urban wetland. For many local families, this space could offer a first step towards discovering the wildlife right on their doorstep.”

Seeing what can be done in a previously vacant and unused space as a result of London Wildlife Trust’s work, with the support of Wimbledon and Emirates, was very special. It was particularly encouraging to see the children’s enthusiasm in the learning session with Steve Backshall and their excitement and keenness to explore the new space and everything that nature offers.”
