London Wildlife Trust's election asks for all Mayoral and Assembly Member candidates

We have the following ‘asks’ for all Mayoral and Assembly Member candidates:

1. Taking leadership on nature’s recovery

  • Strengthen protection to London’s Sites of Importance for Nature Conservation, the key foundations of nature recovery network; and future nature recovery areas are protected in the London Plan;

  • Assist the delivery of viable rewilding schemes as part of a positive nature recovery in London’s Green Belt.

2. Helping reduce river pollution and water scarcity

  • Provide support for London’s river partnerships and other community-based actions to improve the capital’s waterways and waterbodies;

  • Commit to a rollout of Sustainable Drainage approaches in London to help address the impacts of surface water flooding and misconnections.

3. Supporting a thriving network of nature positive greenspaces

  • Help local authorities and other greenspace managers with leadership and resources to transform London’s parks and green infrastructure as a critical adaptive tool for climate resilience and nature’s recovery;

  • Develop an integrated pest management strategy for London’s parks and greenspaces.

4. Enabling people easy access to nature

  • Advocate for every London local authority to implement measures to address the existing inequalities for nearby and easily accessible contact for people with nature in their neighbourhood.

5. Tackling the climate emergency

  • Take leadership and help implement the London Climate Resilience Review’s recommendations;

  • Push for a programme of nature-based adaptive measures to help make London’s most climate-vulnerable communities more resilient from flooding and extreme heat conditions.

We hope you will consider the candidates’ commitments to nature’s recovery and people’s easy access to nature when casting your votes.

The Trust is also member of the A More Natural Capital Coalition, which has published a manifesto and met with a number of the candidates in the run up to the election.
