Volunteer with London Wildlife Trust on Streatham Common

Volunteer with London Wildlife Trust on Streatham Common to improve the woods for butterflies, birds and wildflowers

We will be working in partnership with Lambeth Council and the Friends of Streatham Common to provide some much-needed management for the woods.

Tasks will include coppicing yew and other younger trees to diversity the woodland structure and allow light to reach the wildflowers. We will also be constructing dead hedges to protect mature oak trees from damage to their roots.

97% of English woods have become high canopy since the Second World War due to a lack of management. This has led to worrying species declines in woodland butterflies, birds and wildflowers.

Streatham Common is one of the remaining fragments of the Great North Wood, a woodland that once covered a spread of land from Selhurst north to the Thames at Deptford.

London Wildlife Trust are working to improve these habitats for wildlife in the remaining areas of the Great North Wood
